Rationale

​

The UN's 2050 Net Zero Coalition targets may not be perfect in that they don’t take into consideration the interaction between failing ecosystems and the likelihood that the collapse of one will lead to a cascading failure of others, but they do offer a long-term plan with intermediate milestones against which progress can be measured and governments held accountable.

 

This initiative leverages publicly available information to create a mechanism for holding elected government officials responsible and accountable for pushing their respective government to meet its commitments to contribute to achieving milestones along the way to  reaching both national and global 2050 net zero goals.

Methodology

 

Target, Track, Verify & Divulge

​

1. Establish a long-term roadmap using the 2050 Net Zero Coalition milestones and goals as the baseline

2. Map the electoral cycles of the global north countries relative to the intermediate milestones of the 2050 Net Zero Coalition plan.

3. Map and monitor the performance of politicians in each of the target countries based on information provided by in-country watchdog groups and other organizations

Activities, Targets and Goals

• Track each country's net zero-related environmental and social policy promises (including funding and timelines) in terms of their intermediate and ultimate commitments

• Partner with local organizations in each country to map and track  election cycles and policy promises to track whether the promises are added to the government's official climate policy platform

• Monitor each project's progress towards reaching national Intermediate Milestones

• Continuously update government/politicians scorecards track record of initiating and supporting policies that advance the country to achieving the target milestone.

• Track / monitor progress towards achieving national contributions to Intermediate Milestones to ensure that each country's efforts are consistent with making progress towards the intermediate milestones that need to be reached along the way to reaching the ultimate goal of 2050 net zero.
